As the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) prepared for its special convention to select a presidential candidate for the 2023 elections, Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, the former managing director of FSB International Bank, announced his withdrawal from the race. In a letter to the party’s national chairman, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, he expressed his belief that Nigeria is in urgent need of rescue, citing his interactions with citizens from various backgrounds.

Hayatu-Deen highlighted his concerns about the worsening state of the nation, marked by rising poverty, religious intolerance, banditry, and widespread corruption. He emphasized that these issues reflect a broader collapse of public services and institutions.

Despite his ambition to help Nigeria realize its vast potential and become a leading economic force on the continent, he criticized the primary process, calling it “obscenely monetized.” He noted that his initial intention in joining the presidential race was rooted in a genuine desire to serve the country rather than for personal gain.

He reassured party members of his loyalty and commitment to supporting the PDP, asserting that he would continue to work alongside his supporters to help ensure the party’s success in future elections.
