Lagos, Nigeria – November 5, 2021: The 2021 edition of Art X Lagos, West Africa’s premier international art fair, kicked off on November 5, celebrating African creativity and innovation in the midst of the ongoing global pandemic. This event, which has been held annually since its inception in 2016, showcased a wide array of contemporary African art, reaffirming Lagos’ position as a cultural hub in the international art scene.

Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Art X Lagos 2021 attracted thousands of attendees, both physically and virtually, from across Africa and the world. The hybrid event combined in-person exhibitions at the Federal Palace Hotel in Lagos with a virtual fair, enabling global participation for those unable to attend in person.

Art X Lagos featured over 120 artists from more than 30 countries, including some of Africa’s most prominent contemporary artists. Artists such as Wangechi Mutu, Aïda Muluneh, and Victor Ehikhamenor were among the notable participants. The works displayed ranged from painting and sculpture to digital art and photography, all reflecting the diversity and dynamism of African creativity.

This year’s theme, “The Restorative Power of Art,” focused on the ability of art to inspire, heal, and unify during challenging times. It also emphasized the role of African artists in reshaping global narratives and driving cultural dialogue. Several panel discussions, artist talks, and workshops were held throughout the event, providing a platform for artists, curators, and collectors to engage in conversations about the future of African art.

The virtual component of the fair, Art X Live!, was a significant highlight, bringing together musicians, performers, and visual artists for a series of live-streamed performances. These performances blended visual art and music, further exploring the intersection of creative disciplines in Africa’s burgeoning art scene.

In addition to the exhibitions, Art X Lagos 2021 continued its tradition of supporting emerging African artists through the Access Bank Art X Prize. This year, Nigerian artist Chigozie Obi was awarded the prestigious prize, which includes funding and mentorship to support her career development.

As the fair concluded, Art X Lagos reaffirmed its commitment to promoting African art on the global stage, despite the ongoing disruptions caused by the pandemic. It demonstrated the resilience of the African creative industry and its ability to adapt to new realities while continuing to thrive.
