The-MilkMaidNigeria’s critically acclaimed film The Milkmaid has officially been nominated for the 2021 Oscars in the Best International Feature Film category. Directed by Desmond Ovbiagele, The Milkmaid is Nigeria’s submission to the prestigious awards and is one of the few African films to gain international recognition at this level.

The film, set against the backdrop of the insurgency in northern Nigeria, tells the story of two sisters who are caught up in the violence of a Boko Haram-style group. It explores themes of survival, loss, and resilience while shedding light on the harrowing experiences faced by women in conflict zones. The Milkmaid has been praised for its bold storytelling, stunning visuals, and cultural relevance, making it a strong contender for the Academy Awards.

Desmond Ovbiagele, a former investment banker turned filmmaker, expressed his excitement and pride at the nomination. In a statement, he noted that the film was not only a piece of art but also a platform to raise awareness about the ongoing crisis in northern Nigeria. Ovbiagele also highlighted the importance of African stories being told on global platforms like the Oscars.

This nomination marks a significant milestone for the Nigerian film industry, popularly known as Nollywood, which has long been one of the most productive film industries in the world. While Nollywood has gained recognition for its large output, The Milkmaid represents a shift towards high-budget, critically acclaimed films that resonate on an international stage.

The Oscars ceremony is scheduled to take place on April 25, 2021, in Los Angeles, California, and The Milkmaid is set to compete alongside other international films from countries like Denmark, France, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Although The Milkmaid faces stiff competition, its nomination alone is seen as a major victory for Nigerian cinema.

Critics and film enthusiasts alike are optimistic that the nomination of The Milkmaid will pave the way for more Nigerian films to be recognized on global platforms in the future. As of today, Nigerians and the international film community are celebrating the film’s success, with many anticipating the outcome of the Oscars.
