SolarPower Africa Launches First Solar-Powered Mini-Grid in Mali

SolarPower Africa, a leading renewable energy company, has successfully launched Mali’s first solar-powered mini-grid, marking a significant step in providing clean and affordable energy to rural communities in the country. The mini-grid, located in the rural village of Diema, is expected to supply reliable electricity to over 2,000 households and businesses in the region.

The solar-powered mini-grid, which uses photovoltaic panels to harness solar energy, will help reduce dependence on costly and environmentally damaging diesel generators. Speaking at the launch, SolarPower Africa CEO, Amina Keita, emphasized the importance of renewable energy in promoting sustainable development. “This project demonstrates our commitment to delivering clean, affordable, and reliable energy solutions to underserved communities. The Diema mini-grid is just the beginning, as we plan to roll out similar projects across other rural regions in Mali and beyond,” Keita stated.

Mali has one of the lowest electrification rates in Africa, with less than 30% of the population having access to electricity, particularly in rural areas. SolarPower Africa’s mini-grid aims to bridge this gap by providing a scalable and environmentally friendly energy solution. By using solar energy, the mini-grid will also contribute to Mali’s climate goals by reducing carbon emissions and minimizing the use of fossil fuels.

The launch of this solar-powered mini-grid is expected to spur economic growth in Diema by enabling small businesses to operate more efficiently with a steady supply of electricity. The grid will also power essential services such as healthcare centers and schools, improving the quality of life for residents.
