Togo is rapidly positioning itself as a leader in the renewable energy sector in West Africa, with its ambitious push to expand solar energy capacity. The small West African nation has made significant strides in recent years, driven by a combination of government policy, international partnerships, and private investment, all aimed at reducing the country’s reliance on fossil fuels and increasing access to clean, affordable electricity.

One of Togo’s major achievements in the solar energy sector is the development of the 50 MW Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed solar power plant, which has been hailed as the largest grid-connected solar project in West Africa. Located in the central region of Blitta, the plant was inaugurated earlier this year and is now fully operational, providing power to thousands of homes and businesses across the country.

Speaking on the country’s progress, President Faure Gnassingbé emphasized Togo’s commitment to expanding renewable energy as part of its national development strategy. “Our goal is to ensure that by 2030, 50% of the country’s energy comes from renewable sources. Solar energy is a crucial part of this plan, and we are proud to be leading the way in West Africa,” said Gnassingbé during a press conference.

Togo’s solar energy efforts are not limited to large-scale projects. The government has also rolled out several off-grid initiatives, including the CIZO solar project, which aims to provide decentralized solar power systems to rural communities. This initiative has already reached over 500,000 households, significantly improving energy access for rural populations.

International organizations and development agencies have played a key role in Togo’s solar energy expansion. The African Development Bank (AfDB) and other partners have provided financial support and technical expertise, enabling Togo to scale up its renewable energy projects. The AfDB has praised Togo’s solar energy efforts as a model for other African nations looking to transition to clean energy.

Analysts point to Togo’s clear regulatory framework and proactive government policies as key factors behind the country’s success. The government has worked to attract private investment, simplify licensing procedures, and create incentives for renewable energy developers. As a result, Togo has become an attractive destination for green energy investors.
