Ghana Qualifies for AfroBasket 2021On February 20, 2021, Ghana’s men’s basketball team secured qualification for AfroBasket 2021 with a hard-fought 76-68 victory over Chad. The crucial win in Accra guarantees Ghana’s spot in the prestigious African basketball tournament for the first time since 2017.

The game, held at the Bukom Arena, was fiercely contested, with both teams pushing hard for a spot in the tournament. Ghana started strongly, building an early lead in the first half, but Chad mounted a comeback in the third quarter, reducing the deficit to single digits. Despite the pressure, Ghana held firm in the final quarter, with key contributions from captain Benjamin Debrah and center Samuel Adjei, who led the team with 22 points and 9 rebounds.

Ghana’s defense was pivotal in the closing minutes, forcing Chad into turnovers and poor shot selections. Guard Emmanuel Quaye played a crucial role, scoring vital points in transition and dishing out 6 assists, helping the team regain momentum in the final stretch. The win was met with jubilation from the home crowd, as Ghana secured its place among Africa’s elite basketball nations.

This victory caps off a successful qualification campaign for Ghana, who finished the series with a 3-1 record, securing second place in their group behind Nigeria. Head coach Isaac Kwame expressed his pride in the team’s resilience and determination, especially in the face of stiff competition from regional rivals.

Ghana will now prepare for AfroBasket 2021, which will be held in Kigali, Rwanda, later this year. The team is expected to continue training and fine-tuning its strategies in the lead-up to the tournament, where they will face some of the continent’s top basketball nations.

AfroBasket 2021 marks an important milestone for Ghanaian basketball, as the team looks to improve on its past performances and make a significant impact on the continental stage. With a mixture of young talent and experienced players, Ghana will be aiming to make a deep run in the competition.
