Tsunami Warning in Tanzania: Underwater Volcano Erupts Near Tonga, January 13, 2022

January 13, 2022

2 minutes read

The Tanzanian government has issued a tsunami warning along its eastern coast following an underwater volcanic eruption near the island nation of Tonga in the Pacific Ocean. This powerful volcanic eruption sent massive shockwaves and energy across the ocean, prompting several countries, including Tanzania, to assess the risk of potential tsunamis affecting their coastal regions.

The eruption occurred around 5:00 p.m. local time near the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano in Tonga, creating a widespread alert across the Pacific and extending to parts of the Indian Ocean. Tanzanian meteorologists, in cooperation with international monitoring agencies, are closely observing the wave patterns and possible impacts along the coastline. The Tanzanian Meteorological Authority (TMA) advised residents and those in coastal towns to stay vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel to the coastline until further notice.

Precautions in Coastal Regions

In the coastal city of Dar es Salaam, authorities are actively working to spread awareness of the potential tsunami threat, urging residents to monitor official communications. TMA’s spokesperson, in a press conference this afternoon, reiterated that while the chance of a tsunami reaching Tanzania remains uncertain, the government’s priority is to keep all citizens informed and prepared.

Reports from other countries in the Indian Ocean region, such as India and South Africa, suggest a heightened awareness but no immediate evacuation orders. As of now, Tanzania has not ordered evacuations, but all emergency response units are on standby should the situation escalate.

International Response and Monitoring

This event has drawn attention globally as scientists and experts examine the force of the eruption and its potential to generate oceanic waves across vast distances. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) has issued similar alerts for the Pacific region, while international monitoring organizations are gathering data to provide accurate forecasts on wave height and travel times.

A video of the eruption captured by satellite imagery showed the volcano spewing ash and vapor high into the atmosphere, with plumes visible from space. The event has generated a surge of scientific interest due to its unique force and reach across ocean basins.

What’s Next

As Tanzanian officials and meteorological experts continue to monitor the situation, they are advising residents and travelers in coastal areas to heed safety protocols and stay informed through official channels. The situation remains fluid, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
