Agro-Processing Zones

In a significant move to enhance its agricultural sector and boost exports, the Government of Sierra Leone announced the expansion of agro-processing zones across the country. This initiative, part of the government’s broader strategy called Feed Salone, aims to transform the agriculture landscape by fostering local production, processing, and exportation of key agricultural products.

The announcement was made during a press briefing held at the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security in Freetown, where Agriculture Minister Dr. Henry Musa Kpaka emphasized the need for self-sufficiency and food security in light of global supply chain disruptions. He stated, “This expansion will not only reduce our dependency on imported food but will also create thousands of jobs and strengthen our economy.”

Sierra Leone has faced significant challenges in its agricultural sector, particularly due to the global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing crises, including food inflation exacerbated by the war in Ukraine. In response, the government has identified agro-processing as a critical sector for development, intending to create a more resilient and sustainable food system.

The new agro-processing zones will focus on several key crops, including rice, cocoa, and cashew nuts, which are vital for both local consumption and international export. By establishing these zones, the government aims to streamline operations, enhance value addition, and improve market access for local farmers and producers.

Investment in infrastructure will play a crucial role in this initiative. The government plans to improve transportation networks and utilities to support the operations of these agro-processing facilities. The African Development Bank has pledged support, committing approximately USD 100 million to facilitate this transformation.

The announcement has been met with enthusiasm from local farmers and entrepreneurs, many of whom see this as an opportunity to improve their livelihoods. The initiative also aligns with Sierra Leone’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), focusing on poverty reduction and promoting sustainable agriculture.

In summary, the expansion of agro-processing zones represents a strategic step towards revitalizing Sierra Leone’s agriculture sector, ensuring food security, and boosting exports in a challenging global environment.
