He stated, “This expansion will not only reduce our dependency on imported food but will also create thousands of jobs and strengthen our economy.”
Sierra Leone has faced significant challenges in its agricultural sector, particularly due to the global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing crises, including food inflation exacerbated by the war in Ukraine. In response, the government has identified agro-processing as a critical sector for development, intending to create a more resilient and sustainable food system.
The new agro-processing zones will focus on several key crops, including rice, cocoa, and cashew nuts, which are vital for both local consumption and international export. The African Development Bank has pledged support, committing approximately USD 100 million to facilitate this transformation.
