Algeria Boosts Natural Gas Supply to Europe Amid Crisis

April 20, 2022

Algeria has officially announced an increase in natural gas exports to Europe, responding to the region’s urgent demand for energy diversification. This strategic decision, as confirmed by Algeria’s state-owned energy company, Sonatrach, aims to support European energy needs as the continent seeks alternatives to Russian gas amid the ongoing energy crisis triggered by geopolitical tensions in Ukraine.

Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi secured a significant agreement with Algerian officials in Algiers to boost gas imports into Italy. The deal, in collaboration with Italian energy giant Eni and Sonatrach, is projected to supply an additional 9 billion cubic meters of natural gas over the next two years via the Trans-Mediterranean Pipeline, which runs from Algeria to Italy. This supply increase is expected to mitigate the impact of disrupted supplies from Russia and stabilize European gas markets.

Algeria is a crucial energy supplier to Europe, especially for countries like Spain and Italy, and ranks as the second-largest pipeline gas exporter to the European Union after Norway. The recent agreement with Italy aligns with Algeria’s ongoing efforts to increase its gas production capacity. In 2022, Algeria’s energy production was bolstered by a $42 billion investment plan to enhance output from major gas fields like Hassi R’Mel. Additionally, Sonatrach has expanded partnerships with major international firms, including Italy’s Maire Tecnimont and U.S.-based Baker Hughes, to enhance operational efficiency through advanced technology installations in key facilities.

The renewed partnerships also underscore Algeria’s ambition to strengthen its position in the global gas market while meeting growing domestic energy demands. Sonatrach plans to increase Algeria’s natural gas output by 10 billion cubic meters within the next five years, reinforcing the nation’s role as a stable, reliable energy partner amid global supply concerns. With new pipeline projects also under consideration, Algeria’s commitment to support European energy needs highlights its strategic importance to energy security in the region.

Algeria’s efforts to increase exports through its three main gas pipelines, along with plans to develop further connections, underscore its commitment to supporting Europe during a time of crisis, while also benefiting from elevated global gas demand.
