AFCON qualification

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have officially secured their spot in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after a 1-1 draw against Benin Republic on Thursday. The qualifier match, held at the Stade de l’Amitié in Cotonou, showcased thrilling performances from both teams, with Nigeria’s qualification marking a significant milestone in their journey towards the continental championship.

The Super Eagles’ lineup, featuring stars like Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, and Wilfred Ndidi, showed determination from the start. Benin Republic, nicknamed the Squirrels, took an early lead with a well-executed goal, raising the stakes for the visitors. However, Nigeria responded in the second half, with Ademola Lookman netting a crucial equalizer, ensuring the team secured the necessary point to progress.

With this result, Nigeria concluded their qualification campaign as leaders of Group C, having accumulated 13 points from six matches. Their qualification guarantees a place in the tournament to be hosted in Morocco in 2025.

The team’s head coach, José Peseiro, commended the players’ performance and resilience. Speaking after the match, he expressed optimism about the team’s prospects at the AFCON tournament. “This qualification is just the beginning. We have much to prepare for, and I’m confident we will make Nigeria proud in Morocco,” Peseiro said.

Meanwhile, Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong praised the squad’s unity and focus, noting their ability to bounce back from challenges during the qualification process.

The Super Eagles’ qualification has been met with widespread celebration from fans and stakeholders in Nigerian football. Many look forward to seeing the team compete for the prestigious continental title, a trophy Nigeria has won three times in its history.

As the team shifts focus to preparations for AFCON 2025, Nigerian supporters are optimistic about their chances of achieving success in Morocco.
