Edwin Clark

Elder statesman and leader of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), Chief Edwin Clark, has lauded the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) for the acquittal of former Chief Justice Walter Onnoghen. Onnoghen was cleared of charges related to false asset declaration, a case that had previously generated significant public and legal scrutiny.

Clark, in his statement, praised the judiciary for upholding the principles of justice and fairness in its handling of the case. He described the judgment as a testament to the independence and integrity of the judicial system. He further highlighted the importance of protecting the judiciary from undue interference to ensure its role as a vital pillar of democracy.

The case against Onnoghen began in 2019 when allegations of false asset declaration were brought against him, leading to his suspension as CJN. His acquittal has been viewed as a significant development in the legal and political landscape of the country.

Clark expressed hope that the ruling would serve as a precedent to prevent future attempts to politicize the judiciary and undermine its independence. He also called on all stakeholders to respect the rule of law and work towards strengthening Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
