Monsignor Thomas Oleghe, Nigeria’s oldest Catholic priest, has passed away at the age of 104. The revered cleric, whose life was marked by deep faith and service, died on November 24, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of spiritual dedication and leadership within the Catholic Church in Nigeria.

Monsignor Oleghe was a native of Agenebode, Edo State, and served as a priest for over 80 years. He was ordained in 1944, making him one of the first indigenous Catholic priests in the country. His service extended across various dioceses, where he contributed to the growth and development of the Catholic faith through pastoral care, education, and community service.

As a staunch advocate for education, Monsignor Oleghe played a pivotal role in establishing schools and promoting literacy in rural areas. He was also a mentor to many priests and laypersons who continue to uphold his teachings and values.

The Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) described him as a “pillar of the Church in Nigeria,” highlighting his humility, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to God and humanity.

Tributes have poured in from across the country, with many describing Monsignor Oleghe as a spiritual father who impacted countless lives through his prayers, counsel, and charitable deeds. Governor Wilson Okpebholo of Edo State also expressed condolences, noting that Monsignor Oleghe’s legacy would inspire generations to come.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the Catholic Diocese of Auchi, where Monsignor Oleghe last served before his retirement.
