Group Stage Draw

The stage is set for an electrifying 2024 TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), as the official group stage draw has been unveiled in Rabat, Morocco. This prestigious tournament, which kicks off in January, will bring together Africa’s best women’s football teams to compete for glory and a coveted spot at the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The host nation, Morocco, finds itself in a challenging Group A. Sharing the group with Zambia, Senegal, and tournament newcomers Togo, Morocco will have to leverage its home advantage to navigate through the competition. Zambia, one of Africa’s rising stars in women’s football, is expected to provide stiff competition, having impressed on the international stage in recent years. Senegal’s formidable squad and Togo’s enthusiasm as debutants add further complexity to what many consider the “Group of Death.”

Defending champions South Africa, led by their iconic star Thembi Kgatlana, are poised to maintain their dominance in Group B. The group includes Cameroon, known for their physicality and resilience, Ghana, a traditional powerhouse, and Tunisia, who have steadily improved in recent years. South Africa will undoubtedly aim to retain their title but face stiff opposition in their pursuit of back-to-back victories.

Nigeria’s Super Falcons, the most successful team in the tournament’s history, are the favorites in Group C. With nine WAFCON titles under their belt, they lead a group that includes Ivory Coast, Mali, and Botswana. Nigeria will rely on its rich football heritage and a squad brimming with talent to reclaim the title they last won in 2018. Ivory Coast and Mali will be no pushovers, while Botswana, though relatively new to the scene, will look to make a mark with their spirited performances.

This edition of WAFCON is particularly significant, as it serves as a qualifier for the next FIFA Women’s World Cup. The tournament promises to be a showcase of skill, resilience, and determination as Africa’s top teams battle for supremacy.

Fans across the continent are eagerly anticipating this competition, which highlights the rapid growth of women’s football in Africa. The excitement surrounding the group stage draw sets the tone for what is expected to be a memorable tournament filled with drama and unforgettable moments.
