Kantamanto

The bustling Kantamanto Market in Accra, Ghana, experienced a devastating fire, leaving traders grappling with significant losses. The blaze, which occurred in the early hours of the morning, ravaged over 100 shops, destroying goods worth millions of cedis.

Eyewitnesses reported that the fire broke out around midnight and rapidly spread due to the flammable nature of the materials in the market. Traders, unable to salvage their goods, watched helplessly as the flames consumed their shops.

Efforts by the Ghana National Fire Service to contain the fire were hampered by narrow pathways and the congestion of the market. Though the fire was eventually brought under control, the damage was extensive.

Affected traders expressed despair over the losses, with many losing their entire inventory. A shop owner lamented, “This fire has destroyed everything I’ve worked for. I don’t know how to start again.”

While the exact cause of the fire remains under investigation, preliminary reports suggest that faulty electrical wiring or unattended flames could be responsible. Local authorities have promised a thorough investigation and measures to prevent future occurrences.

The Ghanaian government and various organizations have pledged support for the affected traders. Efforts to provide relief and rebuild the market are underway, with appeals for donations and assistance gaining momentum.

Kantamanto Market is a key hub for secondhand clothing and goods, serving both locals and neighboring countries. The fire’s destruction has disrupted the livelihood of hundreds of traders and could impact the regional economy.
