President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed profound sorrow over the deaths of six soldiers who lost their lives during a recent attack in Damboa, Borno State. The attack, carried out by suspected Boko Haram terrorists, targeted a Nigerian Army base, leading to intense clashes between the military and the insurgents.

In a statement issued by the presidency, Tinubu described the fallen soldiers as heroes who paid the ultimate price to protect the nation. He offered his condolences to the families of the deceased and the Nigerian Armed Forces while emphasizing the government’s commitment to providing support and ensuring justice for the fallen soldiers.

The attack, which occurred earlier this week, also resulted in the elimination of 34 terrorists, according to the Defence Headquarters (DHQ). Military spokesperson, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, confirmed the incident, highlighting that troops repelled the assault and neutralized the insurgents in a fierce counter-operation. Several weapons, including motorcycles and ammunition, were recovered from the assailants.

President Tinubu has directed a comprehensive investigation into the attack, instructing security agencies to identify any lapses and address them promptly. He also reiterated his administration’s dedication to bolstering national security and equipping the military to tackle emerging threats effectively.

This attack underscores the persistent security challenges in Nigeria’s northeast, where Boko Haram and its splinter group, the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP), have waged insurgency for over a decade. Despite significant progress in counter-insurgency operations, the recent attack highlights the ongoing need for vigilance and proactive measures.

The Nation reports that the investigation will not only examine the circumstances surrounding the attack but also evaluate strategies for preventing future occurrences. Stakeholders in the region have called for intensified efforts to secure military bases and protect civilian populations from the fallout of such clashes.

As the nation mourns, the sacrifices of the slain soldiers have reignited calls for unity and support for the Armed Forces. Citizens, advocacy groups, and public officials have continued to pay tribute to the soldiers’ bravery and resilience.

Meanwhile, the presidency has assured Nigerians of its unwavering commitment to securing the nation and honoring the memory of those who have fallen in the line of duty. The loss of these soldiers is a stark reminder of the challenges that remain in the fight against terrorism in Nigeria.
