A gospel singer, John Okoro, has been arrested in connection with the gruesome murder and beheading of his girlfriend, Jane Usman, a serving corps member, near Abuja. The disturbing incident, which occurred in Nasarawa State, has sent shockwaves across the nation.

The police, in a statement, confirmed that the suspect lured the victim to an uncompleted building under the guise of meeting for a discussion. According to eyewitnesses, the situation escalated when church members, who became suspicious of Okoro’s activities, confronted him after hearing unusual noises. Upon their intervention, they discovered Jane Usman’s lifeless body and promptly alerted the authorities.

Okoro allegedly attempted to flee the scene but was overpowered by onlookers before being handed over to the police. A spokesperson for the Nasarawa State Police Command revealed that the suspect had already confessed to committing the crime, citing personal grievances and accusations of infidelity.

Further investigations uncovered a disturbing motive behind the murder. The police are exploring whether the act was premeditated and whether Okoro had accomplices. The suspect is also being interrogated regarding any potential connection to ritualistic activities, as the beheading raised significant alarm about ritual killings in the region.

The victim, Jane Usman, was described by colleagues and friends as a bright and dedicated young woman who had aspirations of making a positive impact in her community. Her untimely death has drawn widespread condemnation from rights groups, who are calling for swift justice.

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) expressed deep sorrow over the loss, urging authorities to ensure a thorough investigation and prosecution of the suspect. The organization emphasized the need to protect corps members, especially those serving in volatile areas.

Nasarawa residents have also voiced concerns about rising insecurity, urging law enforcement agencies to increase vigilance to prevent similar tragedies.

This tragic event has once again brought attention to the prevalence of gender-based violence in Nigeria and the urgent need for stricter measures to protect women. As investigations continue, the suspect is expected to face charges of murder and other related offenses in court.
