The Court of Appeal has affirmed the death sentence handed to Ramon Adedoyin, the owner of Hilton Hotels, Ile-Ife, for his involvement in the murder of Timothy Adegoke, a postgraduate student of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife.

The judgment, delivered on January 23, 2025, upheld the ruling of a lower court that found Adedoyin guilty of conspiracy and murder. The case gained widespread attention after Adegoke’s body was discovered in November 2021, following his disappearance during a stay at Adedoyin’s hotel.

The prosecution argued that Adedoyin and his accomplices had conspired to cover up the crime after Adegoke was killed under suspicious circumstances. The autopsy report revealed evidence consistent with foul play, leading to a high-profile investigation and trial.

In its judgment, the appellate court dismissed Adedoyin’s appeal for lack of merit, describing the evidence against him as overwhelming. The court emphasized the need for justice to be served, particularly in cases involving the loss of life.

The family of the late Adegoke expressed relief at the judgment, describing it as a step towards closure. “No judgment can bring back our son, but we are grateful that justice has been served,” they said.

The verdict has sparked mixed reactions from the public. While many hailed the decision as a victory for justice, others called for systemic reforms to prevent similar tragedies. Human rights advocates emphasized the importance of ensuring accountability within the hospitality industry to guarantee the safety of guests.

Adedoyin’s legal team has not ruled out the possibility of appealing the decision at the Supreme Court. However, legal experts believe the chances of overturning the verdict are slim, given the weight of evidence presented in the case.

The murder of Timothy Adegoke has remained a painful reminder of the need for vigilance and accountability in Nigeria’s hospitality sector. As the case comes to a close, many hope it will serve as a deterrent to future crimes.
