Critical Alert: Google Chrome Users Advised to Update Browser Immediately

The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has issued an urgent security warning for all users of Google Chrome on Windows, Mac, and Linux. This advisory follows the discovery of several high-risk vulnerabilities that could allow attackers to exploit affected systems remotely. Google has acknowledged the flaws and released an updated version of Chrome to address the issues.

According to CERT-In, the vulnerabilities are linked to flaws in components such as WebGPU, Extensions, Autofill Payments, and SwiftShader. If left unpatched, these weaknesses could enable malicious actors to execute arbitrary code, steal sensitive information, or cause a denial-of-service attack. The scope of the vulnerabilities has heightened concerns, as over 3 billion users globally rely on Chrome as their primary browser.

Google has responded swiftly by rolling out a critical update, version 112.0.5615.49, which is designed to eliminate the risks associated with these flaws. Users are advised to install the update without delay to safeguard their devices and data. To update Chrome, users can navigate to the browser’s settings, click on “Help,” and select “About Google Chrome.” The browser will automatically check for and apply available updates.

This security warning comes at a time when cyber threats are becoming increasingly sophisticated, targeting not just individuals but also businesses and government institutions. CERT-In and cybersecurity experts emphasize the importance of maintaining updated software to mitigate potential risks.

While Google has worked diligently to patch the vulnerabilities, users are also encouraged to adopt safe browsing practices. This includes enabling automatic updates, avoiding untrusted websites, and refraining from downloading suspicious files. Organizations using Chrome in their workflows are advised to coordinate with IT departments to ensure all systems are updated promptly.

With the increasing reliance on digital tools, this alert serves as a timely reminder of the importance of cybersecurity vigilance. Chrome users who fail to act on this update could leave their systems exposed to potential exploitation, underscoring the critical need for immediate action.
