Tariff hike

Airtel Nigeria has announced a hike in data and call tariffs, citing rising operational expenses as the primary reason for the adjustment. The telecom provider confirmed the changes, stating that they were necessary to sustain quality service delivery amid increasing costs in the sector.

The new pricing structure affects both prepaid and postpaid users, with adjustments in data bundle prices and call rates. According to Airtel, factors such as inflation, currency devaluation, and higher network maintenance costs have contributed to the decision. The company emphasized that despite the increase, it remains committed to offering competitive pricing and reliable services.

Customers have expressed concerns over the impact of the tariff hike, as the cost of mobile communication continues to rise in Nigeria. Many have taken to social media to criticize the changes, arguing that data and call expenses are already high compared to the average income of Nigerians. Consumer advocacy groups have also weighed in, urging regulatory authorities to intervene and ensure fair pricing within the telecommunications industry.

Industry analysts note that Airtel’s move aligns with a broader trend in the sector, where network providers are adjusting their pricing models to cope with economic challenges. The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has yet to issue an official statement on the development, but regulatory oversight remains a key factor in balancing affordability and sustainability for telecom operators.

The tariff hike raises concerns about accessibility to digital services, especially for low-income users who rely heavily on mobile networks for communication and business. As inflation continues to affect various sectors, Nigerians may have to brace for further price adjustments in telecom services.
