A Moroccan politician has called on citizens to disregard what he described as “foolishness” propagated by Algerian media and its regime. The remarks come amid escalating tensions between Morocco and Algeria, fueled by disputes over Western Sahara and diplomatic rifts that have defined the relationship between the two North African neighbors.

The politician, whose comments have gained attention in Moroccan media, accused Algerian outlets of spreading misinformation to undermine Morocco’s reputation on the international stage. He urged the Moroccan public and media to focus on promoting national unity and development rather than engaging in counter-propaganda.

Relations between Morocco and Algeria have been strained for decades, largely due to differing positions on the Western Sahara conflict. Algeria supports the Polisario Front, which seeks independence for Western Sahara, while Morocco considers the territory an integral part of its sovereignty. This geopolitical rivalry has extended into other areas, including energy politics and regional alliances, further deepening the divide.

The tension escalated after Algeria severed diplomatic ties with Morocco in 2021, citing “hostile acts” and accusing Rabat of collaborating with Israel to destabilize the region—allegations Morocco has consistently denied. The recent media spat is seen as part of this broader antagonism, as both countries vie for influence in the Maghreb and beyond.

International observers, including think tanks like the International Crisis Group, have repeatedly warned that the ongoing hostilities could destabilize the region if not carefully managed. They emphasize the need for dialogue and regional cooperation to address shared challenges, such as economic development, migration, and security threats.

The Moroccan politician’s comments have resonated with many in Morocco, who see the call for restraint as a measured response to Algeria’s provocations. However, analysts caution that ignoring the media war may not fully address the underlying issues driving the tension. They stress the importance of a diplomatic approach to de-escalate the conflict and create a platform for meaningful negotiations.

This latest development underscores the deep-seated animosity between Morocco and Algeria, which continues to shape their domestic and foreign policies. As both nations face growing domestic and regional challenges, the international community is urging them to prioritize peace and stability over prolonged hostilities.
