Billy Byiringiro

Billy Byiringiro’s journey from a small village in Rwanda to winning the prestigious Rhodes scholarship is a remarkable story of resilience and passion for technology. He is the first Rwandan to receive this scholarship, enabling him to pursue postgraduate studies at the University of Oxford. As he approaches his 23rd birthday, he is set to graduate with a first-class degree in Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science from the University of Edinburgh, where he studied on another scholarship.

Growing up in Muhoza, Musanze, in a family of four, Billy faced challenges early in life, including the loss of his father. His fascination with computers began in childhood, and he developed skills in various software programs, including Photoshop and 3D modeling. After excelling at the National Exams in computer studies at Saint-André secondary school in Kigali, he continued to explore his passion for technology independently, culminating in the creation of a digital library program for his school.

His scholarship to Edinburgh was made possible through Bridge to Rwanda, which supports talented students. At Edinburgh, he not only thrived academically but also participated in Hackathons, co-founded BuniTek—a social enterprise aimed at introducing young Africans to technology—and interned at various tech startups in the UK. His commitment to education and technology drove him to seek ways to use artificial intelligence to enhance learning in Africa, particularly in data analysis and machine learning.

Billy faced cultural adjustments when moving from Rwanda to Scotland, including adapting to the weather and the Western education system, which emphasized hands-on learning. Despite these challenges, he focused on the intellectual opportunities presented by his studies.

Byiringiro’s vision for the future is not just about personal success but about solving problems, especially in education, through technology. His dedication to mentorship reflects his desire to give back, as he guides students from his former school and those in the Bridge to Rwanda community in their tech journeys.

As he prepares for his next academic adventure at Oxford, where he will pursue an MSc in Computer Science and a DPhil in Autonomous Intelligent Machines and Systems, Byiringiro embodies the spirit of curiosity and determination. He hopes to inspire others in Africa to harness the power of technology for positive change.
