Airport project

The Federal Government has suspended the planned groundbreaking ceremony for the Osun State airport project following petitions and controversies surrounding the relocation of the project. This decision was announced on December 11, 2024, after a directive from Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development.

The project, initially proposed during the administration of former Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola, has faced multiple delays and changes. Its recent revival by the current state administration led by Governor Ademola Adeleke reignited disputes about the appropriateness of its location and the cost implications.

Keyamo, citing unresolved issues in a statement, requested the Osun State Government to suspend all activities related to the N64 billion project. He emphasized that the Federal Government’s priority is to ensure compliance with due process and address concerns raised by stakeholders, including allegations of mismanagement and environmental concerns.

The Osun chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) commended the Federal Government’s decision, describing it as a move to safeguard public funds. In a statement, the party accused the state government of initiating the project for political gain without adequately addressing the controversies surrounding it.

Governor Adeleke, however, defended his administration’s commitment to the project, insisting it would boost economic activities in Osun State and attract investments. He also assured residents that the government would engage with all relevant stakeholders to resolve the disputes and ensure the project proceeds smoothly.

The relocation of the airport project to a different site has been a focal point of contention. Critics argue that the relocation lacks transparency and does not consider the potential socio-economic and environmental impacts. Petitioners have also raised concerns about the feasibility of the project, given Osun State’s financial constraints.

The Federal Government’s intervention underscores its intention to review all significant aviation projects across the country. Keyamo has assured the public that a decision will be made after thorough consultations and investigations.

As the controversy unfolds, residents and stakeholders in Osun State await further updates on the fate of the airport project, which has been seen as a potential game-changer for the state’s economy.
