Meta

Meta Platforms announced that UK users can soon subscribe to an ad-free experience on Facebook and Instagram. The move responds to growing privacy worries, offering users more control over their data.

Subscription Details

The ad-free plans cost £2.99 ($3.99) per month on the web and £3.99 on iOS and Android.

Subscribers will see no ads, and their personal data won’t be used for targeted advertising, aligning with user demands for privacy.

UK Privacy Push

The UK’s data protection authority has flagged concerns about social media companies’ data practices, pushing Meta to act.

This follows similar changes in the European Union, where strict data rules forced Meta to adapt its advertising model.

Balancing Act

Meta’s ad-free tier aims to satisfy users while keeping its free, ad-supported platforms available. With ads driving 98% of Meta’s $164.5 billion revenue in 2024, navigating privacy laws without harming its business is key.

Industry Trends

Tech giants like Apple and Google have also shifted to limit data collection amid global privacy regulations.

Meta’s UK subscription reflects a wider industry move to balance user rights with ad-based profits.

Looking Ahead

Meta’s new offering gives UK users a choice: pay for privacy or stick with free, ad-supported services. As privacy rules tighten, this could shape how social media operates in 2025.
