Trump Eyes F-35 Deal with Erdogan, Pushes Russian Oil Cut

President Donald Trump hinted at easing sanctions on Turkey and approving F-35 jet sales during his first White House meeting with President Tayyip Erdogan in six years.

The September 25, 2025, talks focused on defense, energy, and trade, with Trump praising Erdogan as a “tough leader.”

Russian Oil Pressure

Seated in the Oval Office, Trump pressed Erdogan to stop Russian oil imports, noting Turkey, Hungary, and Slovakia as key European buyers.

“I’d like Turkey to halt Russian oil purchases while Russia’s actions in Ukraine continue,” Trump said.

F-35 and Sanctions

Trump indicated openness to F-35 sales, saying, “Erdogan will likely get what he wants.” He suggested lifting 2020 sanctions imposed over Turkey’s Russian S-400 systems, “soon, possibly immediately” after a productive lunch meeting.

The U.S. recently drafted a sales statement for F-16 jets, but F-35s remain blocked legally due to the S-400s.

Shifting Dynamics

Under Trump, who has warmer ties with Erdogan than predecessor Joe Biden, U.S.-Turkey relations are thawing. Their shared support for Syria’s central government eases past strains. Erdogan seeks advanced F-16 upgrades and F-35 access to counter threats in the Middle East, Black Sea, and Eastern Mediterranean.

Broader Agenda

Erdogan prioritized defense, regional conflicts, energy, and trade. Trump’s deal-making approach aligns with Ankara’s goals, potentially boosting NATO’s second-largest army.

Gaza Tensions

Despite alignment on Syria, U.S. and Turkey clash over Gaza, where Ankara condemns Israel’s actions as genocide. This could complicate the otherwise transactional discussions.

Strategic Talks

The meeting highlights Trump’s preference for bilateral deals in arms and trade, aiming to strengthen U.S. influence while addressing Turkey’s security needs.
