Mozambique Eyes China’s Industrial Power to Drive Growth, Infrastructure Expansion

President Daniel Chapo is seeking to tap into China’s industrial expertise to fast-track infrastructure development and economic growth, as he tours major manufacturing hubs during his first state visit to China since assuming office in 2025.

During a visit to Changsha, the capital of Hunan Province, Chapo inspected a range of advanced industrial facilities, including power systems, heavy machinery plants, and agricultural processing centres.

The Mozambican leader observed automated production lines, explored smart energy technologies, and tested modern logistics systems—highlighting China’s technological edge in manufacturing and industrial development.

He expressed strong interest in replicating similar models in Mozambique, citing the urgent need for technology transfer, industrial capacity building, and infrastructure investment.

Focus on agriculture, infrastructure

Mozambique’s economy remains largely agrarian, with about two-thirds of its population living in rural areas. However, limited access to modern technology and infrastructure continues to constrain productivity.

Chapo noted that partnerships with China could help modernise the agricultural sector while supporting large-scale infrastructure projects such as roads, bridges, and ports—critical components of the country’s development agenda.

Deepening South-South cooperation

At a bilateral business forum, officials from both countries signed agreements covering sectors including green energy and biomedicine, signalling expanding areas of cooperation.

Chapo emphasised the alignment between China’s long-term development strategies and Mozambique’s national growth plans, positioning the partnership within the broader framework of South-South cooperation.

He described China as both a model for development and a strategic partner capable of accelerating Mozambique’s industrialisation drive.

The visit, hosted by Chinese President Xi Jinping, is expected to strengthen bilateral ties and open the door for increased Chinese investment in the southeastern African nation.
