The UN children’s agency on Thursday condemned the “unconscionable” killing of Palestinians, including children, during a nutritional aid distribution in Deir al Balah, Gaza Strip.

UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell expressed horror at the reported deaths of 15 individuals, including nine children and four women, who were waiting for supplies provided by Project Hope, a UNICEF partner.

An additional 30 people, including 19 children, were injured in the incident, which occurred on Thursday morning.

Personal Tragedy and Humanitarian Crisis

Russell highlighted the human cost, noting,

“These were mothers seeking a lifeline for their children after months of hunger and desperation.”

She cited the case of Donia, whose one-year-old son Mohammed was killed.

Donia, critically injured and clinging to her son’s tiny shoe in a hospital bed, recalled that Mohammed had spoken his first words to her just hours before the attack.

“No parent should have to face such tragedy,” Russell added, underscoring the dire circumstances in Gaza after months of limited aid.

Call for Action and Investigation

Describing the situation as a “cruel reality” due to insufficient aid and failure to protect civilians, Russell reiterated UNICEF’s demand for an immediate ceasefire.

She warned that the lack of aid is driving children toward starvation, with famine risks escalating.

Russell called on Israel to review its rules of engagement, ensure compliance with international humanitarian law, and conduct a thorough, independent investigation into the incident and all related allegations.

Broad Context

The condemnation comes amid reports that over 57,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since October 2023, with widespread destruction rendering the enclave uninhabitable.

The incident highlights ongoing challenges in delivering humanitarian aid, raising questions about the safety of civilians and the effectiveness of current aid mechanisms in the conflict zone.
