South African Women

The Ministry in the Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities (DWYPD) has raised concern over fake job offers circulating on social media. The alleged opportunities target young South African women aged 18 to 22 for employment in Russia.

Government Denies Endorsement

In a statement on Monday, the Ministry stressed that these job adverts are not facilitated or endorsed by the South African government. It explained that all legitimate international employment opportunities are arranged through official diplomatic channels and bilateral agreements, not through social media platforms.

“Although we recognise that South Africa faces unacceptably high youth unemployment, especially among young women, this harsh reality must never be exploited through false job offers,” the Ministry said.

Advice to Youth

The Department urged young South Africans to exercise extreme caution when responding to unsolicited offers online. It encouraged verification of such opportunities through:

  • The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO)
  • Relevant embassies or missions in South Africa
  • The Department of Employment and Labour
  • The South African Police Service
  • The Department of Higher Education and Training

Youth Unemployment Efforts

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to addressing youth unemployment through programmes such as:

  • Presidential Employment Stimulus
  • National Youth Service
  • Skills development initiatives

It also called for collective action from the private sector, civil society, labour, academia, and communities to create sustainable work opportunities for young people, particularly young women.

Next Steps

To gain clarity on the reported job adverts, the Ministry said it will engage with DIRCO, the Russian Embassy in South Africa, and the BRICS Women’s Business Alliance (WBA).

“The safety, dignity, and future of young South African women are of paramount importance. We cannot allow desperation borne of high unemployment to be weaponised against our youth,” the Ministry concluded.
