A potential path to peace in Sudan has failed. The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) proposed a three-month humanitarian truce. However, the Sudanese Army quickly rejected the offer.

RSF Calls for Ceasefire

RSF commander General Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo released a video on Monday. He committed his forces to a prolonged pause in fighting.

Dagalo outlined a plan for a three-month truce. He stated that this would lead to comprehensive peace talks. Additionally, he urged international mediators to pressure the military to accept the deal.

Burhan Rejects “Biased” Mediation

However, the proposal hit a wall immediately. Sudan’s top general, Abdel-Fattah Burhan, rejected the plan.

Burhan accused the mediators of being “biased.” He signaled a deepening rift between the military government and the international coalition.

Who Are the Mediators?

The peace efforts are led by a group known as “The Quad.” This group includes the United States, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates.

For over two years, they have tried to halt the fighting. Their goal is to restore Sudan’s path to democracy. This process was interrupted by a military coup in 2021.

A Humanitarian Crisis

The conflict began in April 2023. It started as a power struggle between the military and the RSF.

The human cost is staggering. Over 40,000 people have been killed. Furthermore, the violence has forced more than 14 million people to flee their homes. Rights groups warn that the true death toll is likely much higher.
