FG Confirms NYSC ₦77,000 Allowance Payment, Backlog to Be Cleared

After months of delay, the Federal Government has reassured members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) that the long-awaited ₦77,000 monthly allowance will be paid, including back payments for those affected.

This announcement was made by the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday.

Backdated Payment for NYSC Members

The NYSC allowance was increased from ₦33,000 to ₦77,000 in September 2024 as part of the implementation of the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024. However, the new allowance has not been implemented six months after the announcement, leading to frustration among corps members.

Who Will Receive the Backlog?

  • Serving NYSC members
  • Corps members who were in service when the increment was announced in September 2024

Minister’s Assurance
Olawande confirmed that the government is committed to paying the backlog, though it may take some time.

“The backlog, we will work on it and make sure it is paid. It may not be immediate, but it will happen,” he assured.

Why the Delay in the Implementation of the new allowance scheme?

The delay in the NYSC ₦77,000 allowance implementation was mainly due to budgetary constraints. The minister explained that:

  • The allowance was not originally included in the budget when the announcement was made.
  • Government agencies need budgetary allocations before disbursements can be made.
  • The necessary approvals have now been obtained, and payments are expected to begin soon.

“Before anybody can approve anything, you must have a budgetary allocation for it. But the budgetary allocation has been done now. We are done with the process and it has been approved. It has been signed, and now they can start paying it,” Olawande stated.

NYSC DG Confirms March Implementation

Last week, NYSC Director General Olakunle Nafiu also assured corps members that the new allowance would be implemented in March 2025.

This statement aligns with the minister’s confirmation, giving hope to thousands of corps members waiting for the increased stipend.

What’s Next for Corps Members?

  • NYSC members should expect payments to begin soon.
  • Backlog payments will be processed for those eligible.
  • The Federal Government has completed the necessary approvals for implementation.

As the government moves to fulfill its promise, corps members can finally look forward to receiving the long-awaited ₦77,000 monthly allowance.
