Starting tomorrow, August 12, 2025, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) will begin enforcing the Tinted Glass Permit (TGP) system across the country.
Motorists with tinted windows lacking a valid permit could face fines, arrest, or vehicle impoundment, according to an NPF statement.
Consequently, this initiative aims to boost public safety and curb crimes linked to tinted windows.
To prepare, the NPF has given vehicle owners ample time to apply for permits via the official portal, possap.gov.ng.
Therefore, motorists are urged to comply to avoid penalties or embarrassment.
Why the Crackdown?
The NPF’s stricter rules are driven by concerns about tinted windows hiding criminal activities. For example, tinted glass can block visibility, making it harder for police to identify suspects.
Initially, the NPF halted tinted glass permits in June 2022 but resumed issuance in 2024 with a new digital system.
This updated system uses QR codes, unique serial numbers, and digital holograms to prevent fraud, aligning with the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act 1991.
Moreover, applications now require National Identification Number (NIN), Tax Identification Number (TIN), biometric data, and background checks, with permits issued within 72 hours.
How to Comply
Motorists with factory-fitted or aftermarket tinted windows must secure a TGP before enforcement begins.
Applications are processed solely through possap.gov.ng.
Importantly, the NPF warns against using unofficial channels, which may lead to fraud or extortion. Citizens can report issues, such as hidden fees, via the hotline: 08147818871.
For those without permits, the NPF recommends removing tinted windows to avoid trouble. Meanwhile, officers will conduct patrols and checks nationwide to ensure compliance.
Public Response and Context
The announcement has stirred conversations across Nigeria, with many motorists acting quickly to comply.
Additionally, this enforcement follows NPF efforts like training officers on the digital system in February 2024 to ensure smooth implementation.
Looking Ahead
The NPF stresses that this enforcement is part of broader efforts to enhance road safety and national security.
By regulating tinted windows, the force aims to create a safer environment. Thus, motorists are encouraged to act promptly to secure permits and avoid disruptions.
