Retired Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has officially received his Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) certificate.
This prestigious honor was conferred by President Bola Tinubu on Monday. Following the announcement, the 32-year-old defender confirmed receipt of the physical document on Tuesday.
Troost-Ekong expressed deep gratitude on social media, describing the event as a proud milestone for his family. Specifically, he thanked the President for the recognition of his services to Nigeria.
Identity and Pride in the Green and White
The veteran defender reflected on his career and his connection to the nation. He noted that Nigeria provided him with the identity and purpose needed to achieve his dreams through football.
“Wearing the green and white has always been a great responsibility, privilege, and a promise to give everything for the badge,” Troost-Ekong stated.
The official certificate cites Section 1(4) of the National Honours Act. It highlights his “outstanding virtues” and formalizes his right to enjoy the title, dignity, and privileges of the MFR rank.
Fulfillment of AFCON 2023 Promises
This ceremony coincides with the Federal Government fulfilling its promises to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) silver-winning squad. Although the tournament took place nearly two years ago, the National Sports Commission has now finalized the rewards:
- Housing: Every member of the 2023 squad has been gifted a house.
- National Awards: Players previously received the Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) award.
- Property: Members of the backroom staff and players also received land gifts.
Support for the 2025 AFCON Campaign
As the current Super Eagles squad begins their 2025 AFCON journey in Morocco, Troost-Ekong pledged his full support. The team is set to face Tanzania in their Group C opener.
“I believe in this group, our nation, and what we can achieve,” the former captain added. He expressed confidence that the current team will succeed in their quest for continental glory.
