Celtic

Brendan Rodgers has stepped down as Celtic boss.

His departure follows a 3-1 defeat to Hearts on Sunday. This left Celtic eight points behind in the league.

Interim Team Takes Over

The club announced on Monday that Martin O’Neill (73) and Shaun Maloney will lead the team temporarily. A search for a permanent manager has begun.

Club Thanks Rodgers

Celtic thanked Rodgers for his contributions. “He played a key role in our success. We wish him well,” the statement read.

Interim Leadership

O’Neill, a former Celtic manager, and Maloney, an ex-player, will handle first-team duties until a new boss is named.

Who’s Next?

Bookmakers favor Ange Postecoglou, recently sacked by Nottingham Forest. He previously managed Celtic with success.

Rodgers’ Celtic Record

Rodgers returned in 2023. He won two league titles (2023-24, 2024-25), plus the Scottish Cup and League Cup.

His first spell (2016–2019) was historic:

  • Two trebles
  • 106-point season
  • Unbeaten league campaign (first since 1899)

Season Struggles

This year brought setbacks:

  • Champions League exit to Kairat Almaty
  • First loss at Dundee in 37 years

Rodgers blamed summer transfers: “We lost goals and power. You can’t race a Civic like a Ferrari.”

Board Fires Back

Major shareholder Dermot Desmond responded sharply. He called Rodgers’ words:

  • Divisive
  • Misleading
  • Self-serving

“No support was ever blocked,” Desmond said. “His claims don’t match facts.”

Toxic Atmosphere

Desmond accused Rodgers of creating hostility toward the board and staff.

Rodgers’ Career Path

The 52-year-old Northern Irishman managed:

  • Swansea
  • Liverpool
  • Leicester (Premier League winner)

He rejoined Celtic in June 2023 after Postecoglou left.

What’s Next for Celtic?

The club aims to regroup fast. O’Neill and Maloney bring experience and club loyalty.

Fans hope the interim duo can steady the ship during a tough season.

Final Word

Rodgers leaves with five trophies in two spells. But his exit marks a dramatic end to a once-celebrated return.
