Nigerian street-hop artist, Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, faced heavy criticism and backlash following his controversial comments about the city of Ibadan. The remarks, which some have labeled derogatory, led to his exclusion from performing at Taye Currency’s concert held in the city.

Portable, known for his outspoken personality, reportedly made disparaging remarks about Ibadan’s music scene, referring to it as lacking vibrancy and class. These comments did not sit well with the city’s residents and music stakeholders, who expressed outrage across social media platforms. Many fans and organizers saw the comments as disrespectful to the city’s cultural significance and its contributions to the Nigerian music industry.

The management of the concert, led by popular Fuji musician Taye Currency, decided to bar Portable from performing at the event. In a statement, the organizers explained that the decision was made to preserve the harmony of the event and respect the sentiments of Ibadan residents. According to the management, Portable’s remarks contradicted the concert’s goal of celebrating unity and cultural pride.

In response to the incident, Portable reportedly shunned the event entirely, refraining from making an appearance even as a guest. This move further fueled the controversy, with some critics accusing the artist of refusing to take responsibility for his remarks. Others defended Portable, suggesting that the decision to exclude him was overly harsh.

The fallout from Portable’s comments has sparked widespread debate. While some fans argue that the artist should apologize for his remarks, others believe his exclusion sets a precedent for holding entertainers accountable for their words. Ibadan residents, in particular, have praised the concert organizers for standing firm in their decision.

The incident raises questions about Portable’s relationship with fans in Ibadan and beyond. Industry observers believe the backlash could impact his future performances in the city and potentially strain his reputation among music lovers. However, Portable has a history of navigating controversies, and it remains to be seen how this will affect his career trajectory.

As the dust settles, the incident serves as a reminder of the power of words and the importance of respecting cultural sentiments, especially for public figures.
