Senate Raises Alarm Over Terrorists’ Invasion in Northwest, Niger State

The Nigerian Senate has raised concerns about the infiltration of terrorists from Mali and Burkina Faso into the northwest region, particularly Niger State. During a plenary session on November 20, 2024, lawmakers warned about the emergence of a new terrorist group, Lukarawa, which is reportedly intensifying attacks in the area.

According to Senator Sani Musa, the group poses a significant threat to national security, with reports indicating that heavily armed militants have taken control of several communities in the region. He described the group’s activities as unprecedented, calling for immediate and decisive action by security forces to prevent further escalation.

In response, the Senate challenged the Nigerian military and other security agencies to intensify operations to halt the group’s advance. The lawmakers emphasized the need for coordinated air and ground assaults to neutralize the growing threat.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has launched an air campaign under “Operation Fansan Yamma,” aimed at addressing the security challenges in the northwest. Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar, highlighted the operation’s objective of degrading terrorist groups and restoring stability to affected areas. During the symbolic flag-off, the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru, lauded the NAF’s operational readiness and reiterated the government’s commitment to combating insurgency.

Reports suggest that the Lukarawa group’s infiltration is linked to the broader regional instability caused by political upheavals in Mali and Burkina Faso. Security analysts warn that the transnational nature of the threat could worsen Nigeria’s already fragile security situation if left unchecked.

The Senate also urged the government to address underlying issues fueling insecurity, such as unemployment, poor infrastructure, and weak border control. Lawmakers emphasized that while military intervention is crucial, long-term stability will require tackling the socio-economic factors that drive insurgency.

As the government intensifies efforts to combat these threats, citizens in affected areas remain vulnerable, with many forced to flee their homes. Humanitarian organizations have called for increased support for displaced persons, warning of a potential crisis if the situation persists.
