President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has returned to Nigeria on Tuesday evening, May 20, 2025, after attending the historic inauguration of Pope Leo XIV in Rome.
He was welcomed by senior government officials, including the Minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, and others at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.
Tinubu at Pope Leo XIV’s Inauguration
The President arrived in Italy on Saturday at the Mario De Bernardo Military Airport and attended the inaugural mass for Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Prevost, at St. Peter’s Square on Sunday.
Pope Leo XIV who was elected on May 8, 2025, became the 267th head of the Roman Catholic Church.
During a reception following the mass, Tinubu shared a handshake and brief conversation with the new pontiff, as captured in a video posted on his official X account.
The inauguration drew global leaders, including U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who also exchanged greetings with Pope Leo XIV.
Tinubu’s Call for Unity
While in Rome, President Tinubu seized the opportunity to advocate for national unity, urging Nigerian leaders and citizens to view the country’s diversity as a strength rather than a source of division.
He emphasized that embracing unity could accelerate Nigeria’s stability and development. His remarks align with ongoing efforts to address regional and ethnic tensions within the country.
Tinubu also held notable meetings during the visit, including discussions with Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, and Kayode Fayemi, former Ekiti State governor.
