Israel’s security cabinet will meet Tuesday evening in Jerusalem to discuss renewed negotiations for a Gaza ceasefire and a possible hostage release deal, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s spokesman confirmed.
Spokesman Omer Mantzour did not provide details of the agenda, but Israeli media reports suggest the meeting will focus on restarting talks with mediators.
Ceasefire Talks Back on the Table
Earlier in August, the cabinet approved a plan for the military to take control of Gaza City. However, Tuesday’s discussions are expected to shift toward diplomacy, with emphasis on a ceasefire agreement and the release of hostages still held in the Palestinian territory.
Netanyahu had already ordered immediate negotiations last Thursday for the release of all remaining captives in Gaza.
Hamas Accepts New Proposal
The meeting comes days after Hamas said it accepted a new ceasefire proposal from international mediators. The plan reportedly includes a 60-day truce and a staggered release of Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails.
Families Demand Action
The Hostages and Missing Families Forum, which represents relatives of those held in Gaza, has called for a national day of action on Tuesday.
In a statement, the group said:
“An absolute majority of the Israeli people want to bring our loved ones home. The deliberate delay of signing a deal for their return goes against the will of the people and our fundamental values — mutual responsibility and friendship.”
Background
Israel has continued its military campaign against Hamas since the October 2023 attacks, when militants abducted hostages into Gaza. Pressure has been mounting on Netanyahu’s government to prioritize negotiations alongside military operations.
