The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday to pay tribute to former President Muhammadu Buhari, who sadly passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 82 in a London clinic.

Interior Minister Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo made the announcement, with the approval of President Bola Tinubu, as part of a seven-day national mourning period.

This decision honors Buhari’s life and legacy, a fact confirmed earlier by his former aide, Garba Shehu.

A Tribute to a Dedicated Leader

In a heartfelt statement, Permanent Secretary Magdalene Ajani echoed Tunji-Ojo’s praise for Buhari, describing him as a leader defined by dedication and integrity.

“This holiday, part of the seven-day mourning period set by President Bola Tinubu, celebrates Muhammadu Buhari’s service,

His key role in strengthening Nigeria’s democracy, and his lasting influence on our nation’s growth,” the statement explained.

It’s a chance for Nigerians to pause and think about his inspiring leadership and the values he stood for.

A Call for Unity and Reflection

Tunji-Ojo urged everyone to use this holiday to foster peace, patriotism, and unity across the country, reflecting Buhari’s dream of a stronger Nigeria.

“His devotion to our nation’s unity and progress continues to light the way forward,” he noted.

As a sign of respect, national flags will be lowered to half-mast from July 13 to July 19, 2025, throughout the mourning period.

Condolences and Future Plans

The government has offered its deepest sympathies to Buhari’s family, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians, while praying for his soul’s peaceful rest.

Details about his burial arrangements are still pending, and the nation awaits further updates as it prepares to honor his memory.
