On October 3, 2025, a Bangkok court imposed a life sentence on Thai national Ekkalak Paenoi for the murder of Cambodian former Member of Parliament Lim Kimya.

The judge opted for life imprisonment instead of the death penalty, considering Ekkalak’s confession to the crime.

The Fatal Attack

The incident occurred on January 7, 2025, when Ekkalak shot Lim Kimya upon his arrival in Bangkok with his wife, Anne-Marie Lim.

Authorities in Cambodia arrested Ekkalak the following day, where he confessed to the shooting in a livestreamed statement.

Widow’s Demand

Anne-Marie Lim, speaking through her attorney Nadhthasiri Bergman, welcomed the sentencing but pressed for answers on the masterminds.

“We’re relieved with today’s outcome, but we need to know who directed this act,” Bergman stated outside the courtroom, highlighting the family’s ongoing quest for justice.

Suspected Links

Cambodian opposition leaders have implicated former Prime Minister Hun Sen, citing his history of suppressing critics.

Two Cambodian men, Ly Ratanakrasksmey and Pich Kimsrin, are wanted for allegedly recruiting Ekkalak and serving as a lookout during the attack.

Government Rejection

Cambodia’s current Prime Minister Hun Manet, son of Hun Sen, firmly denied any official involvement.

Reports indicate Ly Ratanakrasksmey, previously an aide to Hun Sen, was removed from his position in 2024. Thai officials are pursuing extradition for the suspects.

Advocacy for Full Probe

Am Sam Ath, a prominent Cambodian human rights advocate, commended the verdict as progress but insisted on a thorough investigation.

“Everyone involved must be brought to account,” he emphasized, underscoring Lim Kimya’s importance to Cambodian politics.

Lim Kimya’s Background

Lim Kimya served as a parliamentarian from 2013 to 2017 before his party faced a ban. He relocated to France following the events.

In the trial, a second defendant, Chakrit Buakhil, was acquitted after claiming he was merely the driver and unaware of the plot.

Broader Implications

This case sheds light on political tensions in Cambodia and challenges in international justice. The murder has intensified scrutiny on the country’s leadership and opposition struggles.

Future Developments

As October 2025 progresses, pressure mounts on authorities to identify and prosecute those who planned Lim Kimya’s killing, ensuring complete accountability for the tragedy.
