Chelsea Boss Enzo Maresca Calls Liam Red Card ‘Very Stupid’

Chelsea’s head coach Enzo Maresca didn’t hold back in criticizing striker Liam Delap’s late sending-off.

The incident marred an exciting 4-3 win against Wolves in the Carabao Cup. Delap, fresh off a long injury break, got ejected shortly after entering the game.

This added drama to a match that saw Chelsea nearly lose a big lead. The victory advances them to the next round, but the red card raises questions about team discipline.

Delap’s Quick Dismissal and Match Breakdown

Delap had been sidelined for over two months with a hamstring problem. He came on as a substitute in the second half, but his stint lasted just 26 minutes.

The young forward, aged 22, earned two yellow cards in rapid fashion. First, he shoved an opposing defender. Then, he charged into another player. This led to his expulsion from the pitch.

The red card means Delap will sit out Chelsea’s upcoming clash with Tottenham. That game is a key London rivalry. To make matters worse, another forward, João Pedro, is dealing with fitness concerns. Chelsea could face attacking shortages as a result.

The match itself was a rollercoaster. Chelsea dominated early, building a comfortable 3-0 advantage by halftime. Things changed after the break. Wolves fought back fiercely, netting three goals to level the score.

In the end, a stunning late goal from Jamie Gittens sealed the deal for Chelsea. They now prepare to meet Cardiff City in the quarter-finals.

Maresca’s Strong Words on the Incident

Maresca was blunt when questioned about the sending-off. He agreed it was fully warranted and called the action a “stupid foul.” He stressed that such mistakes are preventable and hurt the team.

The coach pointed out broader issues in the performance. Chelsea let in three avoidable goals, he noted. The red card felt especially needless.

Maresca revealed he had warned Delap multiple times after the first yellow. He urged the player to stay composed. Yet, Delap seemed focused on his own game, ignoring advice from the sidelines.

This mindset, Maresca suggested, can lead to poor decisions under pressure. It highlights the need for better awareness during intense moments.

Ongoing Discipline Problems at Chelsea

This wasn’t an isolated event. Chelsea has seen six red cards in their last nine outings. Even Maresca himself got sent off recently for over-celebrating a late win against Liverpool.

The team leads the league in yellow cards over recent seasons. Maresca addressed concerns about a lack of control. He understands some dismissals are tough calls, like those in games against Brighton or Manchester United. But others, including this one and a prior incident against Nottingham Forest, were entirely avoidable.

He described today’s red card as embarrassing. It stemmed from two bookings in a short span, both unnecessary. Maresca emphasized the importance of smarter play to cut down on such errors.

Looking Ahead: Impact on Chelsea’s Season

The victory keeps Chelsea’s cup hopes alive, but discipline remains a worry. Repeated cards could disrupt lineups and momentum. With key players out, the squad must adapt quickly.

Maresca’s comments show his push for maturity. He wants players to learn from these slips. As Chelsea chases success in multiple competitions, fixing these issues is crucial. Fans hope the team turns this drama into motivation for stronger showings ahead.

This episode underscores the fine line between passion and recklessness in football. Chelsea’s talent is clear, but control could make all the difference.
