Russian President Vladimir Putin hosted US envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner at the Kremlin on Tuesday. Kushner is Donald Trump’s son-in-law.
This high-stakes meeting aims to end the four-year war in Ukraine. It marks a significant step in the Trump Administration’s renewed push to broker a ceasefire.
The discussions stretched for five hours. Yuri Ushakov, Putin’s foreign policy advisor, described the talks as “very useful, constructive, and highly substantive.”
Despite the length of the meeting, both parties agreed to keep the specific details confidential.
“It lasted not for five minutes, but for five hours,” Ushakov told reporters. He noted that this allowed for a thorough discussion on achieving a long-term peaceful resolution.
A US-Backed Peace Push
The Moscow summit follows a similar high-level meeting in Florida. recently, US officials engaged with a Ukrainian delegation there. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio characterized those discussions as “productive.” However, he cautioned that significant work remains to be done.
Central to these diplomatic efforts is a US-backed peace framework. The proposal became public last month and drew immediate scrutiny. It appeared to concede to several of Moscow’s core demands, including:
- Territorial Cession: Ukraine ceding the eastern Donbas region to Russia.
- NATO Status: The formal renunciation of Ukraine’s bid for NATO membership.
Kyiv has previously rejected these terms as non-starters. While negotiators have hinted that they revised the framework, the details of those changes remain unclear.
Battle for the “Fortress Belt”
As diplomats convened in Moscow, the situation in eastern Ukraine intensified. On Tuesday, the Kremlin released footage claiming full control of the strategic city of Pokrovsk. The video purportedly shows Russian troops hoisting their flag.
Currently, the video remains unverified. Ukrainian officials have not formally commented on the specific claim. However, President Zelenskyy stated on Monday that heavy fighting continues in the sector. He pushed back against the narrative of a total Russian victory.
The loss of Pokrovsk would be a severe blow to Kyiv. The city is a lynchpin in the “fortress belt” of the Donetsk region. This line of heavily fortified urban centers includes:
- Kramatorsk
- Sloviansk
- Druzhkivka
This defensive line is critical to Ukraine’s ability to hold the remainder of the Donbas. Consequently, the battle for Pokrovsk is one of the most consequential engagements of the current war.
