On September 9, 2025, a gunman on a motorcycle fatally shot prominent Kenyan lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu in Nairobi.

The drive-by attack occurred as Mbobu drove home in the affluent Karen estate, near the Lang’ata-Magadi road junction. Witnesses heard multiple gunshots, and a video showed Mbobu’s bloodied body in his car.

Investigation Underway

The motive remains unclear, but police are investigating. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) vowed to deliver justice.

“We’re determined to provide the justice Mbobu and his loved ones deserve,” the DCI stated. They urged the public to share information and remain calm.

Outrage from Legal Community

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) called the killing “abhorrent” and a possible “predetermined assassination.”

LSK President Faith Odhiambo said,

“Advocates face growing threats for their work.”

She demanded swift action to address the crime and protect lawyers.

Mbobu’s Legacy

Mbobu was a distinguished lawyer, law lecturer at the University of Nairobi, and mentor to many. He served as chairman of:

  • Political Parties’ Dispute Tribunal, resolving electoral disputes.
  • Business Rent Premises Tribunal, handling commercial conflicts.

Senate Speaker Amason Kingi, a former student, called Mbobu a “distinguished advocate” and urged thorough investigations.

Similar Incident Recalled

The attack mirrors the April 2025 killing of MP Charles Ong’ondo Were in Nairobi, a suspected assassination. Police arrested suspects, some of whom face charges, highlighting a pattern of targeted violence.

Why It Matters

Mbobu’s death shocks Kenya, fueling concerns about rising violence against public figures. It underscores the need for stronger security measures and justice to curb targeted killings.
