AA Rano Face Pushback Over Automated Fuel Stations

In a significant pushback against technological shifts in the energy sector, the Concerned Petrol Station Workers group has formally opposed AA Rano’s plan to launch Nigeria’s first fully automated, unmanned fuel stations.

The labor group warns that replacing human workers with machines could trigger a localized unemployment crisis and heighten national insecurity.

The Shift to Self-Service Technology

AA Rano recently announced its intention to debut these high-tech outlets in January 2026. According to the company, these stations will feature a 24-hour self-service model. The infrastructure will utilize:

  • Contactless Payment Platforms: Enabling digital transactions without human intervention.
  • Real-Time Monitoring: Using advanced sensors and cameras to manage site safety.
  • Automated Dispensing Systems: Allowing customers to fuel their vehicles independently.

By adopting this model, the company seeks to eliminate the need for on-site pump attendants, citing efficiency and modernization as primary drivers.

Labor Concerns: Unemployment and Insecurity

In a statement released in Kaduna on Thursday, January 8, 2026, the convener of the worker’s group, Comrade Ibrahim Zango, voiced strong opposition. He argued that while innovation is inevitable, the timing is poorly suited to Nigeria’s current economic climate.

Zango emphasized that thousands of young Nigerians rely on pump attendant roles as their primary source of income. He warned that deploying “job-eliminating technology” without a transition plan is dangerous.

“At a time when Nigeria is already grappling with mass unemployment and a rising cost of living, we cannot afford to push thousands of families into poverty,” Zango stated.

A Call for Regulatory Policy and Dialogue

The workers’ union acknowledged that technological advancement is important but insisted it must not come at the cost of human welfare. The group is now calling on the Federal Government and relevant regulatory bodies to intervene.

Their primary demands include:

  1. Labor Protection Policies: Developing a framework that balances innovation with the preservation of livelihoods.
  2. Corporate Social Responsibility: Urging AA Rano to consider the human impact of its business decisions.
  3. Transition Planning: Creating new roles within the automated system for displaced workers rather than outright termination.

Zango concluded by urging the management of AA Rano to engage in a dialogue with workers and regulators before fully implementing the project. He noted that many industry leaders started from humble beginnings, and current attendants deserve the same opportunity to earn a living.
