Dangote Refinery Denies Shutdown, Supplies 40M Litres Daily

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has firmly denied reports of a shutdown, confirming it supplies up to 40 million litres of petrol daily.

In a statement issued on Friday, August 8, 2025, by Group Chief Branding and Communications Officer Anthony Chiejina, the refinery dismissed claims that truck loading or production had stopped.

“The refinery is fully operational. There’s no shutdown or suspension of truck loading,” Chiejina stated.

This response counters misinformation about operational halts, emphasizing the refinery’s commitment to Nigeria’s energy security.

Located in Lekki, Nigeria, the world’s largest single-train refinery continues to play a pivotal role in reducing the country’s reliance on imported fuel.

The statement addresses public concerns amid speculation about fuel shortages and price hikes, reassuring stakeholders of steady operations.

Clarifying Routine Operations and Maintenance

The refinery clarified that intermittent sales of Residual Catalytic Oil (RCO) are standard business practice.

These sales, often involving large parcel tenders, do not indicate a shutdown. The facility consistently delivers over 40 million litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and steady volumes of diesel daily.

“Our supplies continue unabated,” the statement noted, refuting claims of disruptions.

Dangote employs advanced predictive and preventive maintenance protocols to ensure uninterrupted operations. “Routine maintenance is standard and doesn’t affect fuel supply,” Chiejina added.

This approach underscores the refinery’s operational resilience, maintaining its capacity to meet Nigeria’s fuel demands despite external rumors.

Challenging Rumors with Transparency

Addressing speculation about potential fuel shortages, Dangote issued a bold challenge to detractors. The refinery invited buyers to place orders for 40 million litres of PMS and 15 million litres of diesel daily for the next 90 days.

“Those spreading misinformation should step forward with substantial orders,” the statement urged. This move aims to expose false claims and demonstrate the refinery’s robust supply chain.

The management accused “unscrupulous and unpatriotic individuals” of spreading rumors to undermine Nigeria’s energy independence.

Commitment to Nigeria’s Energy Security

Dangote reaffirmed its dedication to transparency and energy stability. As Nigeria’s largest refinery, with a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, it has significantly cut petrol imports, saving billions in foreign exchange.

Recent data shows Nigeria’s gasoline imports dropped to an eight-year low due to Dangote’s output. The refinery’s efforts align with national goals to end fuel importation, a milestone celebrated by industry watchers.
