CAC

The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) and the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) have rolled out a program to provide free business name registration for 250,000 nano, micro, and small enterprises (MSMEs) across Nigeria.

It was launched in October 2025, and the initiative aims to strengthen the MSME sector by removing financial barriers to formalization, aligning with the government’s vision to foster economic growth.

The program offers free registration and certification, enabling businesses to access valuable aftercare services like grants, training, technical assistance, and market connections. This move seeks to empower entrepreneurs and drive Nigeria’s economic progress.

Why Register with CAC?

The CAC, established under the Companies and Allied Matters Act of 1990, oversees the registration and regulation of businesses in Nigeria. Registering with the CAC is a legal requirement for all companies operating in the country. Non-compliance can lead to steep fines, legal action, or business closure.

Beyond legal compliance, CAC registration protects a business’s name and brand, safeguarding intellectual property from unauthorized use. It also builds credibility, making it easier to access loans, partnerships, and government support, which are crucial for small businesses aiming to grow.

Benefits of the Initiative

The SMEDAN-CAC free registration program delivers multiple advantages for MSMEs:

  • No-Cost Registration: Eliminates the ₦11,000 fee for CAC business name registration.

  • Free Certification: Provides official documentation at no charge.

  • Access to Support: Opens doors to grants, skill-building programs, technical guidance, and market opportunities.

  • Reduced Barriers: Makes formalization affordable, creating a supportive environment for entrepreneurs.

These benefits aim to help small businesses thrive, contributing to job creation and economic stability in Nigeria.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the free registration program, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a Nigerian citizen.

  • Possess a valid National Identification Number (NIN).

  • Operate a business with a verifiable address in Nigeria.

  • Be listed in SMEDAN’s database without prior CAC registration (automatic eligibility for these MSMEs).

This initiative targets nano, micro, and small enterprises, ensuring broad access to its benefits.

Required Documents

To register, applicants need to submit:

  1. Valid ID: National Identification Number (NIN) slip/card, international passport, driver’s license, or voter’s card.

  2. Passport Photo: A recent, clear digital image.

  3. Signature Sample: A scanned or photographed signature.

  4. Proof of Address: A utility bill, tenancy agreement, or official document verifying the business’s current address.

These documents ensure accurate processing and verification of applications.

How to Apply

To take advantage of the free registration, follow these steps:

  1. Visit the SMEDAN portal at portal.smedan.gov.ng.

  2. Create an account with your name, email, and a secure password.

  3. Complete the registration form, providing accurate details about your business and ownership.

  4. Upload required documents, including ID, photo, signature, and proof of address.

  5. Review all entries and files for accuracy, correct any errors, and submit the form.

Applicants should ensure they are in SMEDAN’s database and lack prior CAC registration. SMEDAN will guide participants through the process and notify them when registration is complete.

Looking Ahead

This program marks a significant step toward empowering Nigeria’s MSMEs, a vital driver of the economy. By removing registration costs, CAC and SMEDAN aim to formalize businesses, unlock growth opportunities, and foster resilience.

Entrepreneurs are encouraged to act quickly, monitor updates from SMEDAN, and seize this chance to strengthen their ventures and contribute to Nigeria’s prosperity.
