Adekunle Gold's Album

On October 3, 2025, Nigerian singer Adekunle Gold drops his sixth album, “Fuji,” a heartfelt nod to the traditional sounds of his homeland. “Fuji is the heartbeat of Lagos, the root of Afrobeats,” he shared in a Paris interview.

Cultural Inspiration

A descendant of the Kosoko royal family, the 38-year-old draws from Yoruba traditions, one of West Africa’s largest ethnic groups.

Fuji, a lively genre born in the 1960s from Yoruba Muslim culture, features fast rhythms and sociopolitical lyrics.

Blending Old and New

Gold merges Fuji’s percussive energy with modern R&B, joining artists like Burna Boy in blending Nigeria’s past with global sounds.

“Fuji and Highlife make you feel alive,” he said, noting their universal appeal.

Rising Fame

Known as AG Baby, Gold gained fame in 2014 with a cover of a One Direction song. His hit “Party No Dey Stop” with Zinoleesky, featuring vibrant visuals, has 29 million YouTube views and marked his U.S. breakthrough.

Global Collaborations

Signed to Def Jam Recordings, Gold worked with Nile Rodgers and Pharrell Williams on “Falling Up,” showcasing his growing international influence in Afrobeats.

Personal Themes

“Fuji” explores Gold’s life, from losing his father to celebrating his daughter and family. Though based in the U.S., he said, “My heart stays in Lagos, sharing Nigeria’s culture and traditions.”

Social Impact

Gold, who lives with sickle cell disease, launched a foundation in 2025 to fund treatment and support charities, addressing a personal cause close to his heart.

Nigeria’s Challenges

With 60% of Nigerians below the poverty line, Gold sees progress but urges collective action.

“The government can’t do it all; citizens must step up,” he said, expressing hope for Nigeria’s future.

Why It Matters

“Fuji” bridges Nigeria’s musical heritage with global audiences, while Gold’s advocacy highlights critical health issues, amplifying his cultural impact.

What’s Next

The album’s release in October 2025 is set to solidify Gold’s role as a leading voice in Afrobeats, with more projects and advocacy planned.
