A custom-made Hermès Birkin handbag once owned by the late Jane Birkin fetched an astonishing €8.58 million (about $10 million).

This was at Sotheby’s auction in Paris on Thursday, July 10, 2025, setting a new world record for the most expensive bag ever sold.

The black leather piece, crafted for the British-French singer and actress in the 1980s, drew fierce global interest, culminating in a 10-minute telephone bidding war that ended with Valuence Japan as the buyer.

Preservation and Legacy

Valuence Japan, a Tokyo-based luxury goods reseller, has no plans to resell the iconic bag.

Instead, it intends to preserve and display it as a “piece of global cultural heritage,” honoring Birkin’s lasting influence.

This surpasses the previous record held by a Hermès Himalaya Kelly bag, sold for $510,000 at Christie’s in 2021, reflecting the skyrocketing demand for rare luxury items tied to celebrity history.

Origins and Design

The bag’s creation began in 1984 during a flight when Birkin, frustrated by the lack of a practical yet stylish handbag, shared her ideas with Hermès CEO Jean-Louis Dumas.

Using an airplane sickness bag to sketch her vision, she inspired a unique leather tote that debuted in 1985.

Unlike mass-produced Birkin bags, which command years-long waitlists, this prototype features distinctive design elements and was never replicated.

Birkin sold it in 1994 to fund AIDS charities, and it later joined the private collection of “Catherine B,” who safeguarded it for 25 years.

Provenance and Auction Highlights

Catherine B, who kept the bag in controlled conditions, occasionally showcased it at fashion events, calling it “the most sought-after bag that everybody dreams about” in a pre-auction interview.

Its journey from Birkin’s hands to this record-breaking sale underscores its cultural significance.

Sotheby’s withheld a pre-sale estimate, citing the item’s rarity and unpredictable collector fervor, which drove the final bid far beyond expectations.

Market Trends and Birkin’s Legacy

The sale highlights the booming resale market for Hermès products, where scarcity and celebrity association inflate values well above retail.

Jane Birkin, who passed away in 2023 at 76, left a legacy of style and philanthropy, now immortalized by this handbag.

Her influence continues to shape the luxury fashion world, with the Birkin bag remaining a symbol of exclusivity and elegance.

Future Outlook

Valuence Japan’s decision to exhibit the bag may inspire similar preservation efforts, potentially altering how iconic items are handled post-auction.

This record could also spur interest in other celebrity-linked luxury goods, further elevating the market.

Birkin’s legacy, intertwined with this historic sale, ensures her name endures in fashion history.
