A young gorilla rescued from an airplane cargo hold in Istanbul is recovering well, and officials say preparations are underway to return him safely to Nigeria.
Gorilla Rescued in Istanbul
The gorilla, named Zeytin (Olive), was only five months old when Turkish authorities found him inside a small box in the cargo hold of a Turkish Airlines flight from Nigeria to Thailand.
He had endured difficult conditions during the journey but was quickly placed under care after his rescue.
Recovery at Istanbul Zoo
Since his rescue, Zeytin has been receiving treatment at Polonezköy Zoo Park in Istanbul. He has gained weight, adjusted to his new surroundings, and built strong bonds with his caretakers.
The Directorate General of Nature Conservation and National Parks confirmed that his health has improved steadily, making him ready for repatriation.
Plans for Return to Nigeria
Turkish officials are now working with Nigerian authorities to ensure Zeytin’s return. However, they are seeking guarantees that he will not fall back into the illegal wildlife trade. They also want him placed in a sanctuary designed specifically for gorillas with the right climate and living conditions.
Experts stress that proper reintegration is essential, as both western and eastern gorillas are classified as endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
Wildlife Trafficking Concerns
Istanbul has become a major global air hub, and customs officials are seizing more illegally trafficked animals passing through the city. Zeytin’s rescue highlights the growing threat of wildlife smuggling and the urgent need for stronger international cooperation to protect endangered species.
